What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?  

Autism Spectrum Disorder sometimes referred to as ASD, is a neurological disorder that affects 1 out of every 68 children, depending on the study conducted.

 A diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder now includes several disorders that used to be diagnosed separately: Autistic Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder – not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger’s Syndrome. Autism affects a child’s ability to interact with others, communicate, play, and learn. These disorders affect the brain, and may also affect areas like immune systems, gastric systems, or metabolic systems. Autism Spectrum Disorder may look very different from one child to another, because of the wide range of intensity, symptoms, and behaviors. While ASD is typically diagnosed in children, many adults grow up and find out later that they are on the Autism Spectrum. This goes to show that Autism is not necessarily debilitating. Individuals with Autism may find a variety of ways to function with the disorder. This is made easier through ABA Therapy and an early diagnosis.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder? – Signs and Symptoms

Children with autism generally have deficits or excesses in 3 areas: 

• Communication – Children with autism may exhibit difficulty in communication, especially with non-verbal cues and gestures. They may not be able to interpret the meaning of body language, or have difficulty expressing it themselves. However, this is not always true as symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. A child with autism may be able to speak about certain subjects extremely well, while having difficulty with others.
• Socialization – Communication ability will also affect a child’s level of socialization. Children with Autism may also avoid making eye contact with others. This may make them appear to be uninterested or, even worse, rude. Unfortunately the misinterpretation of this behavior can discourage other children from interacting with them. This leads to even further social isolation. This is why it is so helpful for more people to learn about ASD and, if you think your child may be on the spectrum, to get assistance early in their development.
• Behavior – Children with autism may also have difficulties with their behavior. This can range from hyperactivity and anxiety to aggression or self harm. Having consistent routines and ample sleep are shown to moderate these more extreme behaviors. It is also important to talk with your child and do your best to help them to learn to express themselves in healthy ways.
